Why Christian Romance?

The first question people usually ask me when I tell them what I write, is "What's that?" and then "Why do it?"

Christian Romance novels give a witness to the reader through the form of a love story. There are no offensive love scenes, and no rough language. God's message of salvation is somewhere in the story, and an example of Christian life is depicted in at least one of the main characters.

So, why write it?

I truly believe that love is the greatest of all gifts that God has given to mankind. It was through God's love that He gave us His only begotten Son, and it is through Christ's love that we are saved from our sins.

It's no wonder that the granddaddy of all love stories comes to us directly from the Bible. The relationship between Christ and His people was portrayed in lavish detail in The Song of Solomon. This powerful king who had "largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore," (1 Kings 4:29) waxed poetic in his description of the emotion he felt for his beloved Shulamite. It's ironic that it was a man, and not a woman, who penned the most touching portrayal of a relationship between husband and wife ever found in ANY literature—be it religious or secular.

One of the things that I find interesting about The Song of Solomon, is that God used a love story to communicate the depth of His love for us. Christ also used parables in the New Testament, so the example of telling a story to relate a higher message has been given to us straight from God's Word.

Another instance of the power of storytelling comes from a prison cell in Bedford, England. Rudyard Kipling credited John Bunyan as being "The Father of the Novel, Salvation's first Defoe." Through allegories, John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress has become one of the most published books of all time, and has been a witness to countless generations of future pilgrims.

For me, Christian Romance is just one more way of demonstrating God's Word in human action—and the example of right action can be a powerful testimony to anyone. So fall in love with Christ all over again, and pick up a Christian Romance novel. You might be pleasantly surprised what you find!
